In the beginning and till recently, animated films where produced by photographing a series of hand painted sheets of cellulose. More commonly know as; filmcells or sericells. The artist first created a background. After this background hundreds of artist created hand painted sheets. These where laid over the background. By using the ”multi plane” camera (a invention of Disney in 1933) they created the cartoons.
